SynonymsFrom Wiktionary under the GNU Free Documentation License. The word catholic is derived (via Late Latin catholicus and French catholique) from the Greek adjective καθολικός (katholikos), meaning "universal". The word derives from the Greek phrase καθόλο (kath'holou) meaning "on the whole" or "in general" and is a combination of the Greek words κατά meaning "about" and όλος meaning "whole." In the context of Christian ecclesiology, it has a rich history and several usages. The term has been incorporated into the name of the largest Christian communion, the Catholic Church, which consists of 23 churches sui iuris, in full communion with the Bishop of Rome. The largest of these, the Latin Rite, consists of nearly 95% of the population of the Catholic Church. The remaining 5% consist of the 22 Eastern Catholic Churches. Many Protestants sometimes use the term "catholic church" to refer broadly to the Christian Church and all believers in Jesus Christ across the world and the ages, regardless of denominational affiliation. Generally, to avoid confusion between this concept and the Catholic Church, above, theologians (in English) will refer to the latter as the Church catholic, utilizing the lower-case. The Eastern Orthodox, Oriental Orthodox, Anglicans, Lutherans and some Methodists believe that their churches are catholic in the sense that they are in continuity with the original universal church founded by the Apostles. The Roman Catholic, Eastern Orthodox, and Oriental Orthodox churches all believe that their church is the only original and universal church. In "Catholic Christendom" (including the Anglican Communion), bishops are considered the highest order of ministers within the Christian religion, as shepherds of unity in communion with the whole church and one another. Catholicity is considered one of Four Marks of the Church, the others being unity, sanctity, and apostolicity. according to the Nicene Creed of 381: "I believe in one holy catholic and apostolic Church." I am not sure if I should send her to a Catholic High School, because the way they teach things are different from those of a Baptist. I do not know a lot about the Catholic religion. Would there be a big difference if she went to a Catholic High School. They have mass and what is reconciliation and all the confessions? I know that in Mass, Catholics take communion. Thank you! As a non-Catholic attending a Catholic school, your daughter would not have to attend or participate in mass, confession, or Catholic communion. She would have to learn about Catholicism in religion class, as all Catholic schools have those, but people of many different faiths consider it well worth it to send their children there because of the higher education standards that come with it. Catholic schools are generally quite respectful of differing beliefs. My Catholic high school had quite a large number of non-Catholics attending, and a few non-Catholic teachers as well. They all loved it. Answered by Farsight - Sat Jan 23 12:52:01 2010 What is the difference between Roman Catholic and Maronite Catholic Church ? The history of the Maronite Church is part of the history of the Lebanese people through the Byzantine Emperor, Islam, and the modern period (that's why it's so complicated). In a broader sense the history of the Maronite Church is part of the history of the Roman Catholic Church (see the Wikipedia article). In terms of worship, Maronite worship is Antiochean in origin. The liturgy has similarities with the Roman Catholic and Byzantine traditions. Prayer is in… [cont.] Answered by a - Tue Mar 20 14:10:07 2007 Whats the difference between catholic and christian?
Q. I know that Catholic is a branch in Christianity but there has to be a reason why they are separated? What is that difference? Asked by sup3rsh0rt - Mon Mar 15 03:14:30 2010 - - 17 Answers - 0 Comments A. The 1st C Christian church was Catholic as noted by Ignatius of Antioch, 1st c. A.D: "Where the Bishop is, there let the multitude be; even as where Jesus is, there is the Catholic Church'' (Greek: Katholicos Ekklesia). Some people who want to deny the history of Christianity will say that the Catholic Church did not exist until the 4th C with Constantine. This is an error. It is true that Constantine's Edict of Rome that allowed religious freedom that stopped the killings and persecution. By then the Catholic (Christian) church had grown very large. There were four popes in the 1st C alone: Peter, Linus (mentioned in the Bible), Anacletus and Clement. The first 22 popes were martyred. By the time of Constantine, there had been 30… [cont.] Answered by Charis - Mon Mar 15 03:43:05 2010 From Yahoo Answer Search: "catholic" National Catholic Reporter editorial: it's time for the Church to free the women - National Post (registration) (blog)
