A pigment is a material that changes the color of reflected or transmitted light as the result of wavelength-selective absorption. This physical process differs from fluorescence, phosphorescence, and other forms of luminescence, in which a material emits light.

Many materials selectively absorb certain wavelengths of light. Materials that humans have chosen and developed for use as pigments usually have special properties that make them ideal for coloring other materials. A pigment must have a high tinting strength relative to the materials it colors. It must be stable in solid form at ambient temperatures.

For industrial applications, as well as in the arts, permanence and stability are desirable properties. Pigments that are not permanent are called fugitive. Fugitive pigments fade over time, or with exposure to light, while some eventually blacken.

Pigments are used for coloring paint, ink, plastic, fabric, cosmetics, food and other materials. Most pigments used in manufacturing and the visual arts are dry colourants, usually ground into a fine powder. This powder is added to a vehicle (or binder), a relatively neutral or colorless material that suspends the pigment and gives the paint its adhesion.

The worldwide market for inorganic, organic and special pigments had a total volume of around 7.4 million tons in 2006. Asia has the highest rate on a quantity basis followed by Europe and North America. In 2006, a turnover of 17.6 billion US$ (13 billion euro) was reached mostly in Europe, followed by North America and Asia.

A distinction is usually made between a pigment, which is insoluble in the vehicle (resulting in a suspension), and a dye, which either is itself a liquid or is soluble in its vehicle (resulting in a solution). The term biological pigment is used for all colored substances independent of their solubility. A colorant can be both a pigment and a dye depending on the vehicle it is used in. In some cases, a pigment can be manufactured from a dye by precipitating a soluble dye with a metallic salt. The resulting pigment is called a lake pigment.

How do you set silver pigment ink when rubber stamping?
Q. The red pigment ink dried on it's own, but the silver pigment ink still transfers the metallic particles days later making it pointless. They're both colorbox. I've tried my oldie hair dryer to see if heat sets it w/ no luck. Any tips? I'm just starting stamping. I used to stamp, like 15yrs ago, when I was a kid. I'm familiar w/ embossing powders but don't remember having a tool. I was wondering if I really needed one. Off we go!Thanks!

A. You really need a hotter heating source. This is the heat tool I have. It is just an example from JoAnn's, but you can find one at any craft store.

How long can it take a babys pigment to come back?
Q. My baby's pigment faded on his face due to medicine that was prescribed to put on his face. Now he has white patches on it,how long before it will return to his normal color?

A. There should be an information packet that came with the medicine that should be of some help. You could also google the name of the medicine and see if other people have first hand experience. Or edit your paragraph and give us the name so we can help out a little better. Hopefully its soon though.

What is the function of Chlorophyll B as an accessory pigment?
Q. Hi, I'm just wondering if chlorophyll b is an accessory pigment and does not transfer the energy of light to the carbon fixation reactions of photosynthesis, what is its functions? And I know it's different from carotenoids which protect the plants from high energy radiation. Thx for the help.
Asked by Minitrue - Wed Oct 31 18:14:41 2007 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments

A. Chlorophyll alpha is the most abundant pigment carrying out photosynthesis. Accessory pigments can include chlorophyll b (also c, d, and e), xanthophylls, and carotenoids (such as beta-carotene). They absorb energy that chlorophyll a does not absorb and pass it to alpha. Chlorophyll a absorbs well at a wavelength of about 450 nm and again with a higher peak at red 675nm; Chlorophyll b absorbs most effectively at blue 470 but also at 430 and 640. Alpha absorption peaks in the red while beta peaks in the blue. Xanthophyll absorbs well at 400-530 nm Beta-carotene absorbs most strongly between 400-500 nm. Absorption under water is best in the long penetrating red wavelengths. So alpha still absorbs mostly at that end. The other pigments… [cont.]
