The Parthenon (Ancient Greek: Παρθενών) is a temple in the Athenian Acropolis, Greece, dedicated to of the Greek goddess Athena, whom the people of Athens considered their protector. Its construction began in 447 BC and was completed in 438 BC, although decorations of the Parthenon continued until 431 BC. It is the most important surviving building of Classical Greece, generally considered to be the culmination of the development of the Doric order. Its decorative sculptures are considered some of the high points of Greek art. The Parthenon is regarded as an enduring symbol of Ancient Greece and of Athenian democracy and one of the world's greatest cultural monuments. The Greek Ministry of Culture is currently carrying out a programme of selective restoration and reconstruction to ensure the stability of the partially ruined structure. The Parthenon itself replaced an older temple of Athena, which historians call the Pre-Parthenon or Older Parthenon, that was destroyed in the Persian invasion of 480 BC. Like most Greek temples, the Parthenon was used as a treasury. For a time, it served as the treasury of the Delian League, which later became the Athenian Empire. In the 6th century AD, the Parthenon was converted into a Christian church dedicated to the Virgin Mary. After the Ottoman Turk conquest, it was turned into a mosque in the early 1460s, and it had a minaret built in it. On 26 September 1687, an Ottoman Turk ammunition dump inside the building was ignited by Venetian bombardment. The resulting explosion severely damaged the Parthenon and its sculptures. In 1806, Thomas Bruce, 7th Earl of Elgin removed some of the surviving sculptures, with the Ottoman Turks' permission. These sculptures, now known as the Elgin Marbles or the Parthenon Marbles, were sold in 1816 to the British Museum in London, where they are now displayed. The Greek government is committed to the return of the sculptures to Greece, so far with no success. From Wikipedia under the
GNU Free Documentation License What materials can i use to make a model of the Parthenon? Q. I'm chose to make a model of this for my History class and idk what materials i should use. Since it's an honors class they expect more from us and i want to make an accurate and clean model. Any ideas? :) Asked by Anna G - Mon Oct 20 17:25:56 2008 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments A. Well for the actual building I would suggest using cardboard if you can cut it cleanly. For the pillars, go to your local craft store and if they have a cake decorating section you can find really cool plastic collumns they use to layer tiers on a cake and you can use those! I would look for those first so that you can get the right scale because it is easier to adjust the construction of the actual building to match the columns. Perhaps if Odyssey Marine Exploration became interested in searching for the sculptures that were lost at sea on the way to England... and found them, it would highlight the issue and the way in which the sculptures and frieze were taken... Below is a similar answer I gave just a few weeks ago. I feel as strongly now as I did then if not more so. The UK unfortunately will never let the Parthenon Marbles return to Greece permanently even though 3 out of 4 British people agree to their return. A so called loan to Greece is out of the question as it would then be legitimising the theft by Thomas Bruce, 7th. Earl of Elgin, even though possession would be nine tenths of the law and would then be up to the UK to get them back. What we need is another Greek Goddess like Melina Mercouri:- 18th. October 1920 - 6th. March 1994 She was the strongest advocate for the return of the Parthenon Marbles… [cont.] Answered by PANDORA - Sat Nov 7 15:23:44 2009 Is the Temple of Athena just another name for the Parthenon?
Q. Just doing some studying about ancient Greek architecture and I'm confused. Are the Parthenon and the "temple of Athena" the same building (it just has two names)? Or are they two separate buildings? Thanks! Asked by pinkelectricspider - Sat Dec 12 17:48:42 2009 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments A. The Parthenon in Athens is a fabulous structure built as a temple to Athena, the patron goddess of the city. So yes, to answer your question, the Parthenon is a temple to Athena. There were other temples to Athena in other cities, so be careful here.
